Loading for Cambodia
On May 14th, our partners Delayne & Mike Weeks came all the way from their home in Alberta to help us load our seventh container to Cambodia. Unlike previous containers, this shipment included consumable and diagnostic supplies for small rural clinics as well as a few pieces of equipment and supplies earmarked for Nokor Tep Hospital, a new women’s hospital nearing completion. Nokor Tep Hospital was spearheaded by Janne Ritskes, a Canadian, who came to Winnipeg a couple of years ago to make a presentation to IHC members about her plans for the new hospital – the first hospital in Cambodia just for women.
Loading started promptly at 8 am , assisted again by our friends at Putt’s Transfer and guided expertly by Ron R as Load Master. Despite the chilly day we had a good number of IHC volunteers to assist, so the process was speedy and smooth and completed by 11 am. Given our Alberta partners have no members of their group here in Winnipeg, we greatly appreciated the support of our volunteers that came out to help. Over lunch supplied by Irene from the Legion, Delayne gave our volunteers a most interesting update on Angkor Gold’s Social Responsibility platform in Cambodia as well as the current conditions in the country and the on-going need for our IHC’s assistance. She also spoke about her involvement with the World Health Organization (WHO) and her presentations at WHO meetings in support corporate social responsibility and its value to needy populations around the world. Delayne also encouraged volunteers to know that the work they do every week here at the IHC Warehouse has the ability to change peoples’ lives on the other side of the world.
Many thanks to Beth, Muriel, Diana, Sonia and Trudy for assisting each week as we assembled the supplies and then on loading day. Additional special thanks of course to our Load Master Ron for his expertise plus to the many volunteers who assisted – it is hard to know ahead when we will have enough, or even too many, volunteers to help the heavy loading – so thanks indeed for your efforts everyone.
Sincerely,
Roma
